This piece titled ‘Ghost Nets’ is named after commercial fishing nets that have been lost, abandoned, or discarded at sea. These nets often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. If you google ghost nets and look at images you will see the horrors of beautiful turtles, seals, dolphins and whales entangled in this dangerous ocean waste. An estimated 640,000 tonnes of this fishing gear ends up dumped in the ocean every year according to @seashepherd. .. I’ve wanted to make an image that explores this theme for a while and I am very grateful to these 5 incredible women seen here (tagged) for their braveness in helping me bring this idea to life. I wanted to make an image that on first appearance is beautiful, with ethereal figures and nice light. But when you realise what is happening, I want to show the sadness and darkness that I feel when I see ghost nets in the ocean. It always catches me by surprise when I see one. I can be having the best dive ever then suddenly that beautiful experience is brought back to the realities of what a bunch of tossers the human race are. It’s funny isn’t it that seeing women seemingly trapped here is shocking, yet this is what we do to beautiful ocean animals all the time. And it’s not talked about enough. There are fantastic charities that work hard to try to clear up this mess including the brilliant @seashepherd – Please check them out and donate if you can spare anything. .. Before this turns into a proper essay, I’d like to make a disclaimer here that the safety of these woman was the highest priority during the shoot. I had the brilliant @mattfreediver from @cenotefreediving on hand as safety and although it looks like they are trapped in the net, they are actually just behind it. Of course, it was still an incredible feat for @stivesmermaid, @dancing.underwater @bikini_kiki @flaviaeberhard and @mischiefthemermaid to all look so poised and nymph like. It was definitely the most challenging shoot to date but I feel so proud of everyone involved. .. #saveouroceans #ghostnets #govegan #underwaterphoto #underwaterart #beautifulbizarre #themysterypr0ject #pr0ject_soul

Is there any feeling like being immersed in water? Even though I don’t have access to beautiful locations like this one in Mexico right now, I feel very blessed to live a mile or so from the sea here on the south coast of the uk. I’ve just returned from an early morning swim with a lovely group of friends, a brilliant way to start the day. . As a freediver, I normally train twice a week in swimming pools. Due to covid, these pools have been closed for four months now. I started off swimming in the sea as an interim replacement – not being a massive fan of being cold! But I’ve got the bug now and will continue into the winter if I’m brave enough! My inspiration for bravery definitely comes from @stivesmermaid featured here in the photo – she swims year round in Cornwall and having spent a couple of weeks with her in Mexico I can say that she is one of the reasons I’ve finally become a sea swimmer. (After 10 years of living in Brighton 🙈) Just look at her in her element here with all the fishes – I think they think she’s one of them 🧡 . . . I realise that books and films quite often inspire my photography. Two of my favourite films of all time are ‘The Shape of Water’ and ‘Pans Labyrinth’ both directed by Guillermo del Toro and both very much based on fantasy. There’s something about the way his films portray these mythological worlds, set alongside the harsh reality of real world settings that really interests me. He manages to tell stories that are so poignant and beautifully impactful to me and it’s those kinds of ideas that really drive me to make new work (and it’s also what I seek in artwork I purchase for my walls in turns out!) This picture of @mischiefthemermaid is one we made before the pandemic arrived and since going into lockdown, I’ve been slowly making my way through and editing images that I took in those heady optimistic times at the beginning of 2020. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that now more than ever I am drawn to working on images that have some sort of suggestion of fantasy, maybe as a means of escapism. This fairy like image reminds me of the character Ozma in the movie ‘Return to Oz’ based on L. Frank Baum’s books. She was banished and trapped in a mirror and most references to her were these ghost-like images of her – blurry and dancing behind the glass. Big thanks to Emma @mischiefthemermaid. Very happy to say I just sold this piece and it’s now on it’s way to a lovely collector. All proceeds from this sale are going to the charity @calmzone (Campaign Against Living Miserably). As Covid-19 has forced many more people into isolation, anxiety and loneliness, CALM are experiencing record surges in the demand for their helpline. I’m very grateful to @saatchiart and @theotherartfair for choosing this great cause as their UK charity partner and for asking me to donate a piece of work to sell in this fundraising collection. There are still lots of other pieces of artwork available so please check out the link in my bio if you want to buy some art for your walls and at the same time help a brilliant charity. Win win if you ask me 💙 Big thanks to @iara_mapamio for her underwater modelling skills 🧜🏽‍♀️ #theotheronlinestudios #saatchiart #underwaterportrait #underwaterart #emergingartists #contemporaryartcollectors #artcollectors #britishartists #fineartphotograpy #artistsupportpledge

Her fluidity of movement was like she was being gently pulled back and forth like sea anemones in the pull of the currents. Like a very rhythmic dance. The way Flavia gracefully moved in the water really made me want to create a dramatic baroque style scene by overlaying five shots of her together. These muted colours and tones are quite different for me but I’m always looking for new ways to make my pictures more painterly. This shoot was at a pretty amazing location. Big thanks to @rodotulum for guiding us to this cenote. The reason why it’s interesting is because it has an eerie orange cloud layer in the water which you need to dive through to find the clear water beneath. I think it’s either a halocline or a layer of hydrogen sulfide? Quite a challenging shoot but the hazy light that this cloud filtered down on us was so pretty. Another fun part of this shoot was that Flavia had a film crew with her that day. So they were interviewing us and asking us questions between each dive. Fairly certain the footage they have of me will be quite funny – recovery breathing and interviews at the same time is quite hard it turns out 😆 Model: @flaviaeberhard #underwater #underwaterportrait #tulum #cenote #apnea #freedive #freediving #contemporaryart #baroqueart #renaissanceart #creativegrammer #beautifulbizarre

“The monotony and solitude of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind” Albert Einstein I’ve heard lots of talk these last few days from people speculating on what kind of outcomes will arrive from this pandemic. That’s not to play down the disaster that all of this is – the most obvious and immediate outcome of course is the devastating loss of life. But it’s been pointed out that in the face of past world disasters, what has followed has been periods of prolific creativity. Interesting new art movements, incredible literature and inspiring music. Anything I hear right now that gives me some kind of glimmer of hope is worth sharing I think. . One of the first things I do when all of this is over will be to visit an art gallery (the actual first thing I’m going to do once lockdown ends will be to run like a mad woman down the beach and plunge into the sea) what about you? What are you missing the most? Today is my birthday. 🌈 I woke up much the same way as I have every morning these past few weeks. There’s that initial few moments when you forget everything that is happening in the world. A few blissful blinks where life is unchanged. Where anything is possible. And then realisations come flooding back and you remember what your new life is like right now. The daily need to find purpose. To motivate myself. To distract myself. To go on endless runs. 🏃🏻‍♀️ To try to stop eating so much. 🤭 To have all the time in the world to edit my back log of images. 🥰 To find some way of making a difference for others around me. To make this time count. To work out how to adapt and stay positive when the future is so uncertain. But all of that can wait until tomorrow. For today is my birthday and I’m going to do as little as possible 😎🦥🍹 When all of this is over, who wants to join me for a day of swimming in the sea, followed by pizza and beer? 😆 Model in this shot is @mischiefthemermaid 🧚🏻‍♂️ shot in Tulum, Mexico back in January. I’m so grateful to have spent that month there with such brilliant company before lockdown began. #isolationcreation #isolationart #mermaid #artistsupportpledge #underwaterphoto #underwater #underwaterpotrait #freediving #freedive #apnea #contemporaryart #artcollectors #buyart #fineartphotography #britishartists #emergingartists #themysterypr0ject
