Happy #FlagDay! On this day in 1777, Congress passed legislation on the appearance of the United States flag, ordering that it have 13 stars and 13 alternating red & white stripes. 🇺🇸 . While we love this meme, let’s take a deeper dive into the story of Betsy Ross… . Elizabeth Griscom Ross was an upholsterer once credited with making the first American flag. According to her family, General Washington and two members of a congressional committee visited Ross in 1776, and Ross allegedly convinced Washington to go with 5 pointed stars instead of the 6 that Washington suggested. The story was not made public until her grandson told the tale almost a century later in 1870. Since then, there has been no archival evidence or documentation found to substantiate this story. . Although many historians today believe this story is likely apocryphal, Betsy Ross is known to have sewn flags during the Revolutionary War (based on a receipt from the Pennsylvania State Navy Board that paid her 15 pounds for sewing ship’s standards), and thus still did her part to support the Revolution and the United States flag, even if it wasn’t convincing Washington to put 5-pointed stars on it.
