Roman Robroek egy évben kétszer utazik Olaszországba: egyszer nyaralni, egyszer pedig újabb és újabb elhagyatott épületeket fotózni. Míg más a táj, az emberek, a bor vagy a pizza miatt megy Olaszországba, addig őt ez hozza lázba. A szépség a pusztulásban. Lélegzetelállító képek következnek, némelyik olyan, mint valami ódon, gótikus fantasy, vagy egy sci-fi, esetleg egy horrorfilm díszlete.

This is a photo of one of the rooms of an abandoned Cloister. I am not exactly sure what this room was used for, but I imagine it had something to do with growing plants. The cloister has been built in the early 14th century. Sadly, in the 19th century the cloister had been destroyed. Several elements of the original cloister had later been returned and were used to rebuild it based on the former layout. This is a photo of one of the staircases in an abandoned castle. The castle has been built in the 18th century. During World War I the castle was occupied by Germans and it got damaged due to bombings. After the World War the castle got restored. At the end of the 20th century the castle became abandoned and its current state is very poor. This is a photo of the church of an abandoned college that’s been built halfway through the 19th century. The purpose of the college was to educate priests. Finding approved teachers was quite the challenge and around the 70’s in the 20th century the college was left abandoned. Students were forced to follow a strict daily program and had only 2 nights a week private time to spend however they wanted. The college also had its own farm right next to it which was used to feed the students and teachers. This is a photo that I’ve taken in an abandoned palace. The palace has been built in the 20’s of the 20th century and it was first used as a summer residence. The palace is located in a lovely park and in the park a school has been built about 25 years after the construction of the palace itself. Unfortunately, in the 80’s the palace caught fire and since then it’s been left into disrepair. The palace and the park have been listed as monuments. Nevertheless, the palace is in a terrible state and is waiting for destruction or renovation. This photo is taken in the greenhouse of a beautiful abandoned castle. There were a lot of pianos in the castle which are now stored away somewhere safe while renovations tend to start. There hasn’t been a lot of progress yet, but I’m sure it will eventually complete. People have great plans with this amazing place. The last owner is deceased and his daughters are the last heirs. This is the attic. This is a photo of an abandoned church that’s been erected in the 14th century. The main altar, whereabout I’m standing when taking this shot, is from the 17th century. Some of the statues in here are from the 16th and 17th century. After being abandoned halfway around the 20th century the municipality is taking care of the building. They have secured it from burglary and repaired to roof to prevent further interior damage. (Poland) About 5 years ago I had my first visit to this beautiful place and last year I returned. Nearly nothing changed. This is a photo of an abandoned gasometer that I shot three years ago. A gasometer is basically used to temporarily store gas that was recovered from coal or a factory and used for industrial or private purposes. In the first half of the 20th century this was a very common type of building. Most of the gasometers have since then been demolished due to the introduction of natural gas. This semi-abandoned power station is a true gem among industrial locations and was once Europe’s most advanced power station. The control room itself has been abandoned for quite some time, but most parts of the location are still in use providing power to a major city nearby. This photo is taken in a church that is located in a small town in Czech Republic and has been built in the 14th century. Since the 1960’s the church has been abandoned, until a few months ago. When the ceiling collapsed during a funeral service locals became afraid and boarded up the building. Since then services were held outside. The ghostly figures inside are actually from an art project (made by students) and represent the ghosts of Sudeten Germans which played a role in the history of the town. The ghosts were placed hoping to attract ‘tourists’ so that they could raise money for renovation works (thus this visit was with permission). Renovation is in full progress. This is a photo of a beautiful staircase in an abandoned castle that has been built in the 17th century. It’s actually been built on a medieval fortification. The castle has had several purposes. Children used to celebrate holidays here, it’s been a spa and even a center for drug addicts. About 20 years ago it became abandoned. (France) Visiting this place was a lovely adventure. I’ve taken this photo last year in an abandoned church in Italy. The first time I went exploring in Italy, about 4 or 5 years ago, I remember driving past this building and I took a look at the exterior. Thought I couldn’t get in and continued my journey.
