We live in a world of social conservatism, one that’s dominated by the patriarchy. But about 150 years ago, we women walked topless, but this too was governed by the caste system, where upper class women were ‘allowed’ to cover their breasts. And further, Victorian colonialist fashion dictated we cover up. ‘Modesty’ as is known was termed to be elitist and plays an important part in basic power conflict. Never the less, today when women are harassed and assaulted under the garb of “This is against our culture”. I’m sorry but most of our Indian cultures did not fetishize our breasts and sexualities. THE MUNDU EVEN IN ITS COVERED VERSION WAS THE WORLD’S FIRST TUBE TOP. TAKE THAT PEOPLE WHO SAY SHOWING SKIN IS AGAINST MY CULTURE. Nudity isn’t against Indian culture. Being proud of your sexuality isn’t against Indian culture. Telling women what to do, sadly is. Not to forget however that we’ve always had powerful women who’ve stood up to the test of time. Kerala has today evolved to be very conservative. I’d think twice before wearing jeans in Thrissur. But we have roots that go way back to where women’s bodies were still policed, yet not fetishised. Stop spreading patriarchal propaganda under the garb of culture. The statues of Khajuraho and the old long gone women of Kerala are staring at you and saying “Culture whaaat?”. #KeralaSeries #Kerala #Mundu #Topless #FreeTheNipple #Culture #ThisIsOurCulture #ThisIsNotOurCulture #Breasts #Malayali #Draw #Magazine #TRAD #CultureVulture #Illustration #DigitalIllustration #Clothes #Costume #Attire #Sexuality #Reclaim #Empower #PowerStruggle #CastePolitics #Modesty #Nudity #India #Women #GodsOwnCountry #GoddessesOwnCountry #Magazine

How do you judge good art? Is the worth of my art directly proportionate to the number of likes it gets? . . . I was introduced to this site that gives you analytics and reports and number breakdowns of your profile. I am graded a D minus based on my numbers on this site. And it left me wondering, but what about my content? Has it just been reduced to a number and a grade? . . . It’s ironic, we didn’t want to be the rats in a rat race so we decided to make art for a living instead. On one hand social media gave us a platform to create our content and connect with people but on the other hand, it’s turned this into a rat race too. We are all rats. Rats chasing numbers. . . . Numbers are important, not denying that. But should they be the sole driving factor behind creating content? Numbers make me happy but they don’t motivate or inspire me. So what happens to the art I create then? . . . And every other day there’s a new platform, promising us artists a better interface, algorithm, and interaction. So we now have to generate content for every platform we are on. Quantity matters over quality. . . . I can’t keep up. I cannot generate so much content. I’m still part of the rat race but I’ve decided to win/lose this one at my own pace. . . . My other fear is, if social media ceases to exist tomorrow, am I still an artist? This was bit of a long read, I know. Have a great number-free weekend ❤ #myfears #imnotok #numbergame #ratrace #socialmedia #artists #artistsoninstagram #wherearewegoing #whatisthis #fears

R for Reclaim | Reclamation is the act of re-appropriating and owning of derogatory terms, oppressive behaviour and misogyny towards minorities—and instead use it to represent themselves, fight against the hate and empower themselves. You have the right to autonomy over your body, to be out at whatever time you please in public spaces, dress in whatever you’re comfortable with, a right to have an opinion(and disagree) in a safe space on the internet and offline. There is no shame in having a stain when you’re on your period and you don’t have to have to carry your sanitary napkins wrapped in a newspaper in an opaque black bag—half the female population does not even have access to hygienic sanitary measures. You have the right to resist oppression, push back and reclaim feminism. R for 36 days of Feminist type for this year’s edition of @36daysoftype. Because it’s 2017 and nobody should have to think twice or keep looking over their shoulders, no matter what time of the day they step out. #36daysoftype #36daysoftype04 #36days_r . . . #illustration #illustree #picame #pirategraphic #graphicdesigncentral #art #artprints #graphicart #designspiration #creativecloud #magicgallery #dailysketch #illustrator #designsheriff #india #womensrights #feminism #type #reclaim #bodyshaming #slutshaming #nastywoman #period #bodypositive #36daysoffeministtype
