I posted this piece a couple of weeks back when it was in an earlier stage and now l think it’s finished. Or perhaps not? The painting is constructed around the paradox of a hot, emotionally tumultuous plane of color standing untouched by other marks, giving it a surprisingly restful aspect… or so l have intended. I had an urge to fill the space with graffitic doodles but resisted. What do you think? Another of many paintings produced from observation through my studio window before my landlord saw fit to block all those windows with an exterior billboard. Attempting to “monetize” his exterior fascade, he employed a spectacular cutting edge technology – a canvas material that managed to block every bit of light, air & views while allowing all noise and dirt to continue unimpeded into my space. Unable to continue to work there, l eventually moved out, and now, five and a half years later, l am still defending myself in the courts against a lawsuit that HE filed against ME for the trouble it caused. Quiet Riot 11”x14” Oil on Linen. There are hundreds of near-abandoned town centers strewn across this country. I’ve “revived” a few of them in my most recent series, Beauty, Space & Time, coming up in July at Victory Contemporary in Santa Fe, NM. I guess it’s not too early to plug the show. Lovebirds 18”x24” Oil on Panel. My studio building had an accessible roof that l used for years for Birdseye perspectives and general model shoots under natural light. The 1 story building next to ours housed an auto maintenance business for yellow cabs, so there were always a few taxis parked outside waiting for service. Across from the street stood the UPS truck washing facility that began operations at 1 AM and continued through the night. I walked though a midtown NY office building and saw a shoeshine stall and wondered, ‘How do these guys continue to make a living in this casual world of t-shirts, sneakers and perpetual Friday’s?’. Of course, there are always a few diehard dress-ups, either by choice or work imperative, who will continue to need their services. Here is my homage to the people who toil against the tide of cultural change. Sex In The Air 20” x 30” Oil on Linen. I fiddled with this painting for a period of time, probably too long a period of time, never quite satisfied with the result. While l battled with it, buildings in the picture plane came and went, renovations ensued, streets were torn up and repaved, lawsuits to save historical landmarks played out in court, while the painting went to exhibit in various iterations always returning unsold. Then one day, without changing anything further, l modified the name, adding the word “sex” to the title, and the painting sold immediately.
